The bulldozer operator had removed the topsoil of this area before anyone knew that there were graves in the area. The operations were immediately stopped and this is when we were requested to advice the client. The graves belong to the (grand) parents of the people buried at G1, G2, G3 and G8. Mrs Mbili stated that these graves were already there when she married into the family in c. 1960. She said the graves were mounds of earth. These mounds are now cleared and the exact locations of the graves are not known. I inspected the area in the hope of seeing some changes in soil colour etc to indicate a grave, but this was not possible. These graves either are very near the 60-year mark or are older than 60
years. I suggest that the graves are deemed to be older than 60 years and that archaeological excavations are undertaken to locate the graves. The methods used in archaeological excavations are more likely to locate graves than random
holes excavated by an undertaker. Death records should also be consulted in order to determine the age of death of these two people. The graves along the northern edge of the borrow pit have been demarcated with a boundary fence. It is demarcated as a no-go area until the graves are examined.
