Site Comments:

The prison stands on the opposite side of the river and was built in 1897 in local stone (Ashlarwork). Front centre has a three-bay karoo-type building with stepped and moulded parapet with cornice. The corners have plastered quoins and the door and windows plain surrounds. Two-panelled door with plain fanlight. Sash windows behind bars. Extension on the left has two windows. On the other side of courtyard house with saddle roof, plain gables and ashlar-stone walls. Steel walls. This was apparently the superintendent's house. Rest of the prison complex is original with Ashlar stonework and is of local architectural and cultural value.
