Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

Following comments received on the proposed Revised Schedule of Fees for applications made to the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), made in terms of Section 25(2)(l) of the National Heritage Resources Act No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) and published in the Government Gazette of 22 July 2022, SAHRA hereby publishes the final Revised Schedule of Fees for Applications made to SAHRA. Applications for provision of services submitted to the South African Heritage Resources Authority (SAHRA), in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) must be accompanied by a payment of the appropriate fee, taking effect from 1 January 2023

C. SIGNIFICANCE: 1. Original date of construction/date of first approved plan: c. 1900 TBC 2. Historical Significance: Refer to HIA dated 13/09/2015 by Lindsay Napier. 3. Architectural Significance: “A significant Victorian house; single storied with two pyramidal roofs and three verandas with lean-to roofs; notable details include timberwork to verandas; French doors and bay windows; probably original farmhouse.” B.T.Kearney B.T.Kearney’s assessment criteria in “A listing of Important buildings and places in Durban” 1984 : An excellent example of : Intrinsic design, building type, style and period, detail and proportion. An average example of local technology, intactness of detail, condition, environmental and contextual. A very good example of Intactness of form and Historical and Cultural. 4. Urban Setting & Adjoining Properties: The property is off a cul-de-sac at the end of Bedford Avenue. The neighbouring properties have been developed for social housing with two and three-storey blocks of units. The site falls away from the road. The old house remains are at the highest point of the site which is close to the driveway entrance. The setting is residential and there is little vehicular traffic. The site overlooks the M7 (Edwin Swales rd) highway to the North. D. PROPOSED WORK 1. Purpose of Application: RECONSTRUCTION 2. Motivation for proposed work: The housing development has commenced and the site of the house has been screened off and secured. The remains of the house have been recorded. After negotiations with Amafa and Ethekwini council regarding the future of the ruin at the above property, proposals to reconstruct the house (on the existing walls and foundations) as admin offices and residents’ facilities have been prepared. The house is to be reconstructed according to the record drawings from UKZN, with a few adjustments to planning to accommodate the new use. 3.
