Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

Following comments received on the proposed Revised Schedule of Fees for applications made to the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), made in terms of Section 25(2)(l) of the National Heritage Resources Act No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) and published in the Government Gazette of 22 July 2022, SAHRA hereby publishes the final Revised Schedule of Fees for Applications made to SAHRA. Applications for provision of services submitted to the South African Heritage Resources Authority (SAHRA), in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) must be accompanied by a payment of the appropriate fee, taking effect from 1 January 2023

In order to support the National Development Plan, the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), Department of Energy (DoE) and Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), together with iGas, Eskom and Transnet, have commissioned a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Process to pre-assess two expanded Electricity Grid Infrastructure (EGI) corridors to facilitate a streamlined Environmental Assessment Process for the development of energy infrastructure related to electricity, while ensuring the highest level of environmental protection. It is proposed that the final corridors be embedded and integrated into Provincial and Local planning mechanisms to secure long term energy planning. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) was appointed in April 2017 to undertake the SEA Process, in collaboration with the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).

Expanded_Motivation: 

Five EGI corridors were assessed as part of a separate SEA Process (in response to the Strategic Integrated Project SIP 10: Electricity transmission and distribution for all) which concluded in 2016 and was gazetted in 2018. As part of this current SEA, two 100 - 125 km wide Expanded EGI corridors are being assessed from an environmental sensitivity and engineering constraints perspective. These are expansions of the gazetted Western and Eastern EGI Corridors, and they respectively extend to the border of Namibia and Mozambique. Specific EGI routes will not be identified or assessed as part of the SEA. The 100 - 125 km wide corridors are being assessed for sensitivities to facilitate route planning by potential developers. The SEA Process consists of three phases: Phase 1 - Inception; Phase 2 - Assessment of the Corridors; and Phase 3 - Decision-Support and Gazetting. Phase 1 was completed in 2017. Phase 2 of the SEA is nearing completion.
