Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Proposed sampling of Equus Cave MSA human remains for aDNA

Expanded_Motivation:

Fred Grine in collaboration with Eske Willerslev propose sampling of human teeth specimens in the McGregor Museum collection from Equus Cave in order to extract ancient DNA. The permit would be for a) destructive sampling of portions of the roots of the teeth in question and b) temporary export permit for the sampling to take place under optimal laboratory conditions in Copenhagen. The McGregor Museum supports both a & b, having also consulted a specialist in this field in South Africa, and in the knowledge that the facilities for the sampling and analysis do not yet exist in this country. A detailed research proposal together with previous research papers on the specimens are attached. Fred Grine undertakes to personally carry the specimens to Europe and back again when he returns to South Africa in January 2015.
