Activities:

Conditions:

The Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage (MUCH) unit at the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is pleased to issue the abovementioned permit.

The following terms and conditions apply:

  • If the permit holder is not present on the site at all times during the relocation, SAHRA must be provided with the names and contact details his authorised representative(s).

  • Work must be limited to the rescue relocation of the suspected shipwreck timber containing several large nails found on the Yzerfontein 16-Mile Beach in August 2019, which is currently located at approximately -33.330143, 18.160221 and must be placed at approximately -33.346280, 18.154593, in front of the Municipal Offices in Yzerfontein. This permit is issued solely for the works outlined in the permit application, and no activities beyond those outlined in the permit application may be carried out without the express permission of SAHRA.

  • This permit gives the holder the sole right to conduct rescue relocation of the suspected shipwreck timber containing several large nails found on the Yzerfontein 16-Mile Beach in August 2019 for the duration of the permit period.

  • This permit does not exempt the holder from obtaining all necessary and applicable additional permits, approvals, or consent for any activities in connection with the work (e.g. road closures).

  • It is the responsibility of the permit holder to ensure that all works are strictly monitored at all times. The permit holder is responsible for ensuring that no debris, whether directly originating from the suspected shipwreck timber or not, is left along any part of the transportation route, and for ensuring that the lift site, transportation route, and lay-down areas are returned to the same condition as they were prior to the works.

  • Should pieces dislodged from the suspected shipwreck timber at any time during works, these pieces must be carefully collected, and their point(s) of origin recorded. Such pieces must be kept in a safe place until feedback has been received from SAHRA.

  • If there is cause for concern that the suspected shipwreck timber may be significantly damaged by any activities in connection with this permit at any time during works, work must cease and SAHRA must be informed. In this event, work may not commence until feedback has been received from SAHRA.

  • The lay-down area must be thoroughly inspected prior to placing the suspected shipwreck timber. Upon placing the suspected shipwreck timber at the lay-down area, all efforts must be made to ensure that it is stable.

  • Adequate recording methods must be employed during all work under this permit. Photographs and, if available, video footage captured by the permit holder must be submitted to SAHRA within two (2) months of the conclusion of the rescue relocation, together with the report referred to directly below.

  • A final report on the results of the rescue relocation must be submitted to SAHRA within two (2) months of the conclusion of the rescue relocation.

  • Reprints of all published papers and/or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.

  • If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.

  • SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to properties or persons, regardless of whether they are under the employ of the permit holder, volunteering their assistance with the works, or members of the public, as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

  • SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
