Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

The Partial demolition of the derelict Strand Jetty

1. If the permit holder is not present on the site at all times, SAHRA must be provided with the names and contact details of his/her authorised representative(s). 

2. This permit gives the holder and/or his/her authorised representative(s) the sole right to demolish a portion of the derelict Strand Jetty, Bart’s Corner, Strand within the duration of the permit period. 

3. All works must be limited to the activities described in the Strand Jetty Report (Sept 2022), Proposal Description and Expanded Motivation. All activities undertaken must be for the sole purpose of:
  • Removal of the exposed upright supports on the beach in Section A;
  • Removal of the entire section of Section B including the supporting uprights, supporting beams and boards;
  • Removal of all loose, rotten and partially detached boards and support beams in Section C as well as any rotten or collapsing wooden footings;
  • Removal of loose and partially detached supports beams in Section D. 
4. This permit does not give authorisation for damage/disturbance of any cultural heritage material not mentioned in (3) above. In particular, permission is not hereby granted for the disturbance of any shipwreck material whatsoever. Should any cultural heritage material not mentioned in (3) be discovered and be at risk of damage/disturbance as the result of the activities undertaken under the authority of this permit, SAHRA must be notified immediately and work must cease and may not commence until feedback has been received from SAHRA. Should any shipwreck material be discovered, SAHRA must be informed of its location and this information must be included in the permit report referred to below.

5. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to obtain permission from the landowner for each visit, and conditions of access and the use of vehicles on site imposed by the landowner must be observed. 

6. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to apply for and obtain any additional permits that may be required for the activities listed in this permit application. 

7. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

8. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

9. The closing report for works on the Strand Jetty must be made available to SAHRA within one month of the expiry of this permit.

10. A person who wishes to appeal the decision to grant this permit may do so within fourteen (14) days of the issuing of this permit.
