Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

Sibanye-Stillwater is planning to extend the life of mine at K4 Shaft with 30 years and is planning to construct additional infrastructure around the current Waste Rock Dump (WRD) footprint to contain the dirty water run-off from the WRD. The additional infrastructure includes the construction of a V-drain catchment berm, new Pollution Control Dam (PCD), a pipeline from the PCD to the shaft and an emergency spillway.

Expanded_Motivation:

A Heritage Impact Assessment was commissioned and found heritage sites within the proposed development footprint. The specialist concluded that the heritage observation made were limited to the remains of demolished ruins that could resemble the border around gardens or hut foundations. The features were also indicated on a Topographical Map dating back to 1968 and is therefore assumed to be older than 60 years. The identified features have been demolished to such an extent that their potential to contribute to aesthetic, historic and social aspects are considered to be non-existent and has been identified by the specialist as of low heritage significance.
