HeritageAuthority(s):

Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Unauthorised development of a site over 5000m2 and unauthorised alterations and additions to buildings over 60 years of age. The site is over 10 000m2 and comment is required from the heritage authority on the rezoning of the application. As the buildings on the site are the oldest in the area, they are nominated for formal protection.

Expanded_Motivation:

Garages have been developed on the site for use by small tenants running small businesses. The old post office and trading store have undergone internal and minor external alterations to create smaller commercial spaces for tenants. The municipality has threatened to demolish the unauthorised work subject to applications being submitted and heritage authorisation is part of that process. The buildings served travelers between the former Transkei and the Colony (later Province) of Natal and were a important stopping place for those making use of the pont over the river before the current bridge was constructed. The buildings continue to serve the commercial needs of the community.
