ProposalDescription:

Alterations and Additions to Hospital Buildings to erf 906, 2 Inchanga Drive, Inchanga West, KwaZulu- Natal. Drawing 20.38 01-00-02/ 20.38 11-00/ 20.38 11-01/ 20.38 21-01-01

Expanded_Motivation:

The Inchanga station was built in 1896, the hotel was built by Tomkins (the restaurant catering contractor) in 1903 and promoted as a Health Resort. It changed hands when the mainline bypassed Inchanga in the 1920’s. It has been a hotel, a school and now a psychiatric hospital.A fine example of an Edwardian hotel, face brick with main façade gables and verandas facing the station and terraced garden. Verandas have encaustic tiles and timber posts and curved beams. The building had a major upgrade in 2008 when it was converted to the hospital, many of the original windows and doors were replaced. The site is in a rural setting with only the Inchanga Station and the station master’s house in close proximity. The hospital wishes to increase the number of beds and to provide en-suite bathrooms to all wards. This will involve the demolition of some of the service area and staff ablutions and replacement with a double- storey block with new service areas, dining area and wards above on first floor level. The existing rooms in the original building need equal provision of en-suite ablutions. Additional service areas and admin spaces are needed for the increased numbers.
