Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

The gallery building of the Beer Hall Complex at 102 Florence Nzama Road, ERF- 11338, Durban KwaZulu Natalis currently incomplete internally and the environment is not suitable for gallery or public use. The proposed renovations are to restore the building to its original condition while repairing and upgrading the necessary facilities to create and establish the building as a quality gallery space.

Expanded_Motivation:

The proposal is a re-use of an existing Beer hall, which was converted for occupation by the Durban Art Gallery & Local History Museum’s collections department in 1994. In 2014 the Local History Museum was relocated and one of the existing halls, being utilized as a technical centre, was converted into a gallery space while the outbuildings were converted for use during functions to be held at the site. The current proposed changes encompass renovation, restoration and completion of the gallery building which was not completed during the previous phase of work due to time and budget constraints. The current building is excessively dusty due to the unsealed floors which have not been leveled and pose a safety risk for certain people groups (e.g. low vision or physically impaired) as they are at an increased risk of falling in one of the holes or tripping over some of the protruding flooring. The A/C is not functioning properly and is unable to cope with demanding during events, it is also producing excessive noise levels causing discomfort and it is leaking into the into space which may lead to damage of artwork or exhibitions. The current facility is not secure and additional measures are required before exhibitions or artworks of high value can be display in the space. The existing lighting is not adequate for gallery purposes and may damage artwork on display while simultaneously consuming unnecessary energy. The current exhibition display panels which were installed for the 2014 UIA event are positioned in front of the chimney vents, these are to be removed and replaced with new movable panels which are to be positioned in the centre of the room without hindering view of the chimney vents. The chimney vents are to be restored to their original condition where possible and used for the display of exhibits and artwork. All the changes or processed proposed aim to create a quality exhibition venue within the space while appreciating and restoring the existing building to it's initial condition.
