john.rogers 26/07/2012 - 18:15 As a geologist who has experience of Quaternary coastal deposits in the Western Cape and who has supervised two Honours Projects while based at UCT, on the geology of Robben Island, I am wary of sites such as these wich are obviously mainly of disturbed material I recommend that Dr David Roberts of the Council for Geoscience be approached as he, since I left both the CGS and UCT, has advanced research into such Late Quaternary coastal deposits using dating by OSL. In other words, a geologist should be consulted to detemine the contact between the original geological deposits under the Cooling Pond. I recommend that a reference trench be dug in undisturbed ground near the Cooling Pond, if that can be found, which would both benefit this investigation and be of educational value to the geological community and for future field trips to the island. (I have led several field trips myself, two for theFfriends of the South African Museum, staying overnight in the former Convicts Prison, now renovated for backpacking groups. I should value the contact details of the current Head of the Robben island Museum, so that I can pass on my knowlege to his Tour Guides for daily use as the many visitors to the island receive very little geological and archaeological i information at present. One error in the main report is that my former Claifornian colleague at UCT, Dr Christie Rowe,, would never have written that the lte Pleistocene deposits were 125 MILLION years old. They are about 125 THOUSAND years old.
maria.vanderryst 27/07/2012 - 09:53 We have been informed at the May AMPHOB meeting of the circumstances under which the excavation has been undertaken. Obviously we cannot refuse the issuing of a permit at this stage. However, the applicant should again be made aware that such a work ethos is totally unacceptable for any heritage site and, even more pertinent, in view of the heritage status of RI.This may jeopardise the review of any future applications by this particular archaeologist and partners.
alex.schoeman 27/07/2012 - 15:43 I concur with Maria's position.
