ProposalDescription:

Environmental Authorization process for the proposed upgrades to Sublime Road, Near Matla, Kriel, Mpumalanga Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

The current Application for Environmental Authorisation is underpinned by the increase in traffic from coal imports to sustain the Matla Power Station burn rate. This is the result of the decreased production from Matla Colliery. The upgrading of Sublime Road has thus become necessary because of the high demand and composition of the existing and expected increase in traffic load to the coal mine. It is important to understand that road safety requirements form a key motivation behind the proposed intersection upgrade at the R580 and Sublime Access Road crossing. According to the statistics, it is estimated that approximately 32% of rural accidents occur at intersections. Therefore, with the substantial increase in coal trucks presently exiting via this intersection, a major change in traffic patterns and load has occurred. The substandard existing intersection layout does not meet the standards required for number and type of vehicles utilising the intersection, and therefore upgrading of the intersection is required.
