ProposalDescription:

Application for an Environmental Authorisation to obtain a mining permit for a proposed borrow pit on the remainder of the farm Die Plaas (Vlaktefontein 210), Lady Grey District, Eastern Cape.

Expanded_Motivation:

The proposed project entails the extension of an existing gravel borrow pit to a maximum area of 5 ha on the farm Die Plaas 210 (Vlaktefontein 210), located approximately 27 km east of Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape Province. The gravel will be sourced from a weathered dolerite dyke visibly outcropping in the exising borrow pit and the excavation will extend in a north-westerly direction. The gravel will be used for upgrades and special maintenance of the R58 road between Aliwal North and Lady Grey. The proposed development is underlain by geologically residual soils and weathered Molteno Formation sediments. The latter is considered of potentially high palaeontological significance due to intact fossils that may be encountered in the operational phase of the pit. However, no fossils or fossil exposures were observed in the existing borrow pit. Moreover, no above-ground evidence of archaeological heritage were found within the proposed site footprint.
