Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

The Skywalk at God’s Window is envisaged to be a glass walkway, extending some 16 metres from the Canyon’s edge, offering 360° panoramic views with a 700 metre vertical drop below, abutting a green concept building which will house a restaurant, museum and gift shop.

Expanded_Motivation:

A land claim through the Land Bank was instituted by the surrounding local communities of Pilgrim’s Rest Development Trust, Moletele Communal Property Association, Setlhare Communal Property Association and Mahubahuba Bokone Communal Property Association. The Skywalk at God’s Window is envisaged to be a glass walkway, extending some 16 metres from the Canyon’s edge, offering 360° panoramic views with a 700 metre vertical drop below, abutting a green concept building which will house a restaurant, museum and gift shop. Potential exists in the future to supplement this attraction with the addition of a ‘Skylift’ and/or an observation tower. The Skylift concept would involve a vertical drop by a hoisting system into a series of suspended walkways in the forest below. However this particular aspect does not form part of this EIA. The Skywalk complex will consist of a lower and upper level. The development includes: • Provision of electricity services to the site • Restaurant and Museum Area • Reception Lobby • Ablution Facilities • Admin Office • Skywalk Viewing Area • Upgrade of existing walkways around the site • Formalised craft market area • Seepage Pond (to assist with run-off attenuation) • Formalised Parking Areas (160 light vehicles, 6 covered bus bays and 14 taxi shuttle bays) The design aims to compliment the surrounding environment and centres on the principle of sustainability by incorporating a suspended floor slab, a garden roof, solar panels (PV), rainwater harvesting and sourcing pine gum poles from the surrounding plantations for the structural columns.
